Tumbling Ep 09 - Notes of Doom

Yay! It's another episode of Tumbling! ^_^

We're in the final stretch with only two left.

Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Bon-odori – A type of dance performed during the Obon festival in the Summer. These dances are usually for groups of people, and vary from region to region as they are folk dances often derived from the types of work done in the area. For example, one old favorite is called Tanko-bushi, "coal mine song." Below is a video from an Obon festival in Setagaya, Japan. You can see that the dance is very repetitive and that it's done in a circle around a central stage.

For more on Obon, please see our notes for Ando Natsu 5.

“So, you feel like you owe that guy a favor.” / “Jaa, Aitsu wa omae no onjin tte iu wake da na.”
– The word “onjin” literally means benefactor, and is commonly used in the phrase  “inochi no onjin,” (“the person who saved my life”). The word also carries a connotation of owing that person a debt that can’t really be repaid. “Benefactor” doesn’t make sense in English in the context Wataru uses it. “Inspiration” makes more sense, but it doesn’t carry the same weight in English that “onjin” does in Japanese. So, I chose a translation that was closer to what he meant instead of what he literally says.

Shamisen – 3 stringed instrument common in traditional music, similar to a guitar or banjo

Here are the Yoshida Brothers doing a more modern song with their shamisen, proving that a East/West Sound Collaboration can be successful:

"Suihei riibe boku no fune." – This is an mnemonic device used in Japan to help memorize the first two rows of the periodic table of the elements. It doesn't make any sense as a literal translation:

Navy soldier, love (liebe, which is German), my ship

According to this site, the break up is:

Sui (H) hei (He) rii (Li) be (Be) bo (B) ku (C) no (N, O) fu (F) Ne (Ne)
すい(H)へい(He) りー(Li)べ(Be) ぼ(B)く(C)の(N,O) ふ(F)ね(Ne)

And here’s a link to the periodic table.

History studies - The history lesson the boys are talking about refers to the period when Commodore Perry, of the US Navy, sailed into Uraga Harbor to compel Japan to open its ports (besides Nagasaki) to foreign trade.

Ryosuke uses an exaggerated accent to talk about this incident. You’ll often here this accent when people are imitating how foreigners (specifically Americans) sound when they speak Japanese.

back flip on the bar - For some reason, in elementary school in Japan, they make everyone learn a back flip onto a bar. It's hard to explain the move. You hold on to the bar with both hands, then kick your legs up and over the bar. You end up upright with your weight supported by your arms. If you watch the video below it'll all make sense. ^_^

Oooh, thanks!

I'm in the UK and I learnt how to roll onto a bar too, although I remember that not many other people did. I wouldn't call it a backflip, it's much, much, much easier. XD XD

To those saying "Hey can you sub this ASAP" that's a bit rude. Subbing is hard work and takes a lot of time to make the translations as close as possible to English, and as a natural-sounding as possible too, without losing the meaning from the Japanese words.

As for me, I'm eagerly anticipating the final two episodes and will continue to check back on your lj and d-addicts every few weeks to see if they're up. No rush. :)

just decided to watch the drama and I noticed the last two eps haven't been subbed ;_;
are you still on your hiatus? I really wish you would get out of your hiatus and continue the last 2 eps >.<
thanks for all the subs you've been doing ^^

I just discovered Tumbling (Its been kind of on the back burner for a while now) and I've absolutely fallen in love with it. The friendship, bromance and plot in general just sucks me in. Thank you for all the subs thus far. I read about your hiatus and hope you are all enjoying your much needed rest.

Will be eagerly awaiting the day you guys come back to finish this lovely little gem _(_ _)_ arigato!!

Hi! Did you ever sub the last two episodes?
Oct. 11th, 2011 09:10 am (UTC)
Oops. Don't mind me. Clicking to comment without reading everything first.

No pressure from me. Hoping you guys are enjoying your much-needed rest after all the awesome work you've been doing. I'll be looking forward to your grand return! :D
