Re: The Recent Movement to Suspend Softsubs

In response to the recent movement to suspend the release of softsubs in the effort to make a stand against unscrupulous persons who make a profit off of the work of fansubbers or repost/post to streaming sites without the fansubbers' permission...

We have discussed the topic in depth, and have decided not to participate for several reasons...

1) Staffers from dramacrazy.net asked us if they could use our subs for GiraGira and we gave permission. Since then, they haven't asked again, but for Voice, I emailed them and gave permission to use our softsubs and not TimeLesSub's hardsubs.

2) We have made a commitment to the fans (and, in some cases, a fellow fansub group) to translate. Halting our production would be a betrayal of their trust.

3) We have given permission to a number of fansubbers to use our softsubs to translate various series into other languages. To cease our softsubbing now would be to inconvenience many we have given our promise to.

4) Suspending the release of softsubs unnecessarily punishes all those who follow the rules. In our opinion, it's a case of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater." It isn't fair to those people who remain polite and appreciative of our hard work.

5) sayochama was a part of a well respected anime fansubbing group for many years. During her time with them she formed the opinion that once you release your work out into the world you have little to no control over what people will do with it. You save yourself a lot of heartache if you learn to let go.

Of course we want credit for our work. And of course it upsets us when people use our work for their own gain without asking us. But we're not in this for the money, or for the glory (whatever glory there may be). We're doing this because there are amazing stories out there that we want as many people as possible to be able to understand. We do this because it's a way to bridge the gap between cultures. It's a way to educate and to learn.

So while we understand and respect the position of those who have decided to suspend the release of their work indefinitely, and their willingness to fight, we regret that we cannot join then. We hope that all of you, in turn, will respect our position.
